Katherine Jenkins rings Lord Ashcroft on Who Wants to be a Millionaire?

(Daily Mirror)

When celebrities Gabby Logan and Katherine Jenkins got stuck on Who Wants to be a Millionaire? they rang their friend … a real-life billionaire. They chose Tory party bankroller Lord Ashcroft who seemed confused by his role.

Singer Katherine and TV host Gabby picked him while stumped by the £10,000 question: “Which author shares his name with the captain of HMS Victory at Trafalgar: a) Charles Dickens b) Graham Greene c) George Orwell d) Thomas Hardy?”

Katherine, 29, said: “Shall I ask Lord Ashcroft? He is incredibly bright, I wouldn’t ask anyone stupid.”

But when he was called, Lord Ashcroft did not speak for 25 seconds and then simply said: “Hardy.” Puzzled Katherine said: “Did he mean that as knowing the answer?”

The pair trusted him and got it right. They went on to win £20,000. An insider at the ITV celebrity quiz said: “He blurted out one word. It was embarrassing.”
